BASE: IPFW Shuts Out Saint Francis 5-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team used a three-run fifth inning with two more runs in the sixth to provide all of the scoring in its 5-0 win over the Saint Francis Cougars on Tuesday evening at Mastodon Field on the IPFW campus.

The win improved IPFW to 17-15 on the season, while Saint Francis falls to 13-26.

Shannon Baker and Jackson Boyce each went 2-for-3 at the plate for IPFW, while Brock Logan drove in two in a 2-for-4 effort. Boyce scored twice, as the trio had six of the eight hits for the Mastodons.

Kyle Orwig improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching the first six innings of the game while scattering three hits and striking out four. Dane Davis picked up his first save of the season while striking out four over the final three innings of the game.

Orwig at down the first 10 batters he faced, before surrendering his first base runner with a hit by pitch in the fourth inning. His no-hitter was snapped in the fifth inning when Cole Gerardot hit a sharp shot up the middle as a lunging Boyce at second base was able to just knock the ball down. After a sacrifice bunt moved Foster (who was hit by pitch to open the inning) and Gerardot to second and third, Orwig forced a ground ball to Baker at third base who threw home for the inning’s second out, and a groundout to Boyce at second preserved the scoreless game.

After a strikeout to open the bottom of the fifth inning, Boyce got the scoring action started with a bunt single before Brandon Soat followed with a single of his own. A double-steal put runners on second and third, before a strikeout put the second out on the board. A batter later Whitman hit a dribbler just in front of the plate; however, the throw from the catcher to the first baseman hit Whitman in the back, allowing Boyce to score on the throwing error. Shane Trevino walked to load the bases, as Logan singled to center field, scoring Whitman and Soat and putting the Mastodons ahead 3-0.

An inning later Baker opened the inning with a single and after moving to second on a wild pitch, was moved to third on Boyce’s second bunt single of the game. A Soat walked loaded the bases, as Evan VanSumeren hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Baker and moving Boyce ahead a base. With runners on the corners, Soat took off towards second base, and as the throw left the catcher’s hand, Boyce sprinted home to complete the double-steal, and gave the Mastodons their fifth and final run of the game.

The Mastodons put a runner on second in each of their last two innings, including with the bases loaded in the eighth; however, neither time would a run score.

The Cougars mounted their best attempt to score in the top of the ninth inning, when Saint Francis picked up three hits sandwiched between a pair of outs; however, a looking strikeout ended the game and secured the team’s third shutout of the season.

The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, April 15, when the team takes on the Purdue Boilermakers in a 5:30 p.m. first-pitch at Alexander Field.
