FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Shawn Szydlowski netted two goals in the third period and Roman Will stopped 33-of-34 shots as Fort Wayne bested the Evansville Iceman 4-1 Wednesday night at War Memorial Coliseum.
Christian Ouellet opened the score in the first period with his 16th goal of the season, giving the Komets a 1-0 lead. Evansville responded with a goal from Joe Zarbo to knot the game at one after 20 minutes.
In the second frame C.J. Severyn’s ninth goal of the season staked the Komets to a 2-1 lead. Szydlowski’s two goals – his 36th and 37th of the season – put the game on ice in the third period.
Despite the win, the Komets didn’t gain any ground on Toledo in the race for first place in the North Division. Toledo beat the Indy Fuel 3-2 in Indianapolis on Wednesday night giving the Walleye 99 points to Fort Wayne’s 96. Both teams have played 67 games and have five regular season games remaining.
