WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite a Shane Trevino solo home run to lead off the second inning, the IPFW baseball team fell 9-1 to the Purdue Boilermakers at Alexander Field on Wednesday evening.
The Mastodons had five hits in the game, one each from Brandon Soat, Trevino, Greg Kaiser, Shannon Baker, and Jackson Boyce. Trevino had the team’s only run and RBI in the contest.
The Boilermakers jumped out early, behind a three-run bottom of the first inning before senior right fielder Trevino took a two-ball, one-strike pitch and hammered it over the wall in right-center field, cutting the Mastodon deficit to 3-1.
From there, the Mastodons were unable to score again, as the host Boilermakers scored again in the bottom of the second, twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the eighth to give the game its 9-1 final score.
The Mastodons threatened to cut into the gap in the top of the ninth inning with back-to-back hit-by-pitches on Isaiah White and Trevino, before a wild pitch moved the pair to third with no outs; however, a fly-out, strikeout, and fly-out ended the threat, giving the game its complete run total.
Brandon Pease picked up the loss, falling to 0-2 as the Mastodons used seven different pitchers and 17 position players in the effort.,
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, April 3 at Mastodon Field when the team hosts conference foe North Dakota State in the first of three Summit League games.
