FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Collin Cohen sets new career highs in kills, digs, assists, and blocks as the 15th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men’s volleyball team fell to No. 4 Lewis in straight sets. The Mastodons finished 16-25, 26-24, 17-25, falling to 16-9, 6-6 (MIVA) while the Flyers improve to 19-2, 10-1 (MIVA).
Cohen, one of eight seniors honored prior to the match, set new career highs in every major volleyball category. Cohen and Alex Harthaller each earned seven kills, while Cohen added seven digs, two assists, a solo block, and an ace, each new career highs. Luis Bertran earned 10 digs, while Omar Rivera recorded 21 assists.
The Mastodons fell behind early in the first set, 10-6, and were unable to climb back as Lewis continued its solid hitting. Cohen led the ‘Dons with three kills in the opening set, while adding three digs and an ace.
The second set saw IPFW go up 10-7 early on, but the Flyers continued to fight back, knotting it at 13 a piece midway through the set. After falling behind 15-13, the ‘Dons would go on a 9-2 run, giving them a 22-17 lead late in the set. Lewis, however, would eventually take the second set 26-24 over IPFW. Gabriel Quinones notched six digs in the second set, while Bryan Saunders earned five kills.
IPFW kept the third set close as the Flyers held a 9-7 lead early on. However, Lewis would control the net, earning 12 blocks in the final set. The Mastodons earned a combined six digs in the third set, led by Bertran’s three.
For the match, the Flyers outpaced the ‘Dons 39-31 in kills, while both teams split aces, earning three each. Additionally, Lewis edged IPFW 32-31 in digs.
The Mastodons return to action when host in-state MIVA rival Ball State on April 4 at 7 p.m., in the final regular-season home match legendary head coach Arnie Ball.
