Man found dead Wednesday morning identified

Police are investigating a death Wednesday morning on the city's southeast side.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The man found dead by on Holton Avenue on Wednesday morning has been identified by the Allen County Coroner.

Police are trying to figure out how 21-year-old Jaymaris R. Alexander ended up dead near an alley on the city’s south side Wednesday.  A man living in the 2900 block of Holton found the body shortly after 10 a.m. and called police. Investigators said there’s no obvious sign of how Alexander died, but the man who found the body said he thinks Alexander died in a gun battle late Tuesday night.

Alexander’s death is the sixth homicide for Allen County in 2015.

Neighbor Chris Weis said he went to check things out this morning because late last night he heard gun shots and was afraid to walk outside in fear he’d get hit by a stray bullet.

“I just don’t understand it, why or how somebody could do something like that,” Weis said.

Police said they responded to a report of gun shots in the area late Tuesday night but didn’t find anything.  It wasn’t until Weis called Wednesday morning that police found the body.  Weis said it was emotional to find someone dead just feet away from his home.

“When I knew he was dead I told him I was sorry. I could had did something more. I specifically told him that myself. Even though he is dead, I felt the need to say something to him.”

Weis said this is the third dead body that has been found in his neighborhood. After this deadly discovery, he told NewsChannel 15 he is planning to move.

“I said that last time, but this is right 10 feet from my house. It’s a sign of just I need to move. I don’t need to die myself. I’ve got two boys. I don’t need that in my life.”

While Wednesday’s death investigation is just minutes away from the shooting that left one person in critical condition less than 24 hours earlier, police say the two are unrelated.

“There’s no reason to believe that this is related to the Bowser situation that took place yesterday. There’s nothing that suggests that at all. This is a new and unique death investigation,” FWPD Spokesperson Officer Michael Joyner said.

As for the person responsible for killing Alexander, Weis has a few choice words for you: “You’re an idiot. No man should be shot down like that. Especially the way the cops told me. I don’t care what he did or what happened.”
