FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A portion of Hobson Road was closed late Thursday into Friday morning as crews worked to repair a water main break. They finally got the main fixed about mid-morning and the road was back open just before noon.
The break was reported by police around 11 p.m. Thursday after a large amount of water was discovered in the road. One worker said the break was significant.
A water main on one side of the road is six inches and a separate main on the opposite side is 24 inches. Workers Friday morning were primarily in the northbound lanes near the six inch main, but it’s unknown which main ruptured.
Water was bubbling up in several places along Hobson Road and also flowing from a sewer cover in a nearby front yard. Water was flowing into one sewer drain, but others were either frozen over or ineffective at draining the large amount of water. The southbound lanes of Hobson Road for a stretch of about 100 yards is significantly flooded and impassable. Water in several spots was already frozen over with the below-freezing temperatures.
There were several barricades set up for the road closure between East Coliseum Boulevard and Vance Avenue. Motorists were routed to East Coliseum Boulevard or Crescent Avenue as an alternate while the closure was in place.
It’s unclear how many homes and nearby businesses were affected.
