MVB: Solid Hitting Leads No. 13 Mastodons to Sweep over Loras

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 13th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men’s volleyball team swept Loras to kick off spring break in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons finished 25-19, 25-10, 25-17, improving to 11-5, while the Duhawks fell to 3-13.

The Blue and White played with balanced attacking as Andrew Sellan and Alex Harthaller each earned double-digit kills. Sellan finished with 12 kills, while hitting .632, and Harthaller wrapped up the night with 10 kills, while hitting .714.

Jordan Armstrong set a new career high with 37 assists, topping his previous mark of 25 at Quincy on April 6, 2013. Additionally, Tyler Golsteyn set a new career high with four aces, breaking his previous mark of two against Barton on March 1, 2014.

The Mastodons jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the first set, highlighted by a 4-0 run. Loras battled the ‘Dons throughout the opening set, but the Blue and White would continue to find ways to answer back. With the score knotted at 12, IPFW would go on a 3-0 run and refused to relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set. Sellan led the ‘Dons with seven kills in the first set, hitting .700, while Harthaller recorded five kills, hitting .833 in the set.

The second set saw IPFW go up 6-2 early on after earning four-straight points. The ‘Dons would continue to control the set following a 5-0 run late, giving them a 21-8 lead over the Duhawks. Balanced attacking led the ‘Dons in the second set, as Harthaller earned five kills, while David Frazee and Tony Price each had four.

IPFW controlled most of the third set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead following an 8-1 run early on. The Mastodons continued to roll with an 8-2 run late in the match, putting them up 19-11. IPFW completed the sweep with three-straight points, earning a 25-17 win in the third set. Gabriel Quinones earned four kills in the set, while Luis Bertran earned four digs.

For the match, the Mastodons outscored the Duhawks 43-23, limiting Loras to a .039 attack percent. IPFW held a 7-3 advantage in aces and a 33-29 edge in digs.

The Mastodons return to action when they kick off a three game Carolina swing at Erskine on Monday, March 9. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Due West, South Carolina.
