FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In the fourth and final match of a busy weekend for the IPFW women’s tennis team, the Mastodons fell in a battle with 38th ranked DePaul University on Sunday morning at Empowered Sports Club.

During the weekend IPFW swept the Mid-American Conference’s Bowling Green and the Horizon League’s Green Bay, while winning 6-1 against Butler from the Big East Conference, before falling to the defending Big East Champion and 38th ranked Blue Demons on Sunday.

,”This was an excellent finish to the weekend,” said IPFW head coach Eric Burns. “Obviously, we would have liked to win the match, but the effort and intensity was at a high level across the board today. DePaul is the 38th ranked team in the nation for a reason, they are an excellent team; however, considering it was our fourth match in less than 48 hours, we competed at a very high level. I’m proud of our team and how we handled such a tough weekend. You learn a lot about your team from a weekend like this.”

The Mastodons battled through the doubles point, as the Blue Demons swept through the early advantage, winning 6-3 at No. 2. The IPFW No. 1 doubles pair of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato faced off against the 39th ranked doubles squad in the country of Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling, and fell 6-3. The doubles point was decided; however, the IPFW No. 3 doubles pair of Alina Schibol and Sara Sherif battled with DePaul, falling 7-5.

In singles, Alina Schibol fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to DePaul’s Patricia Lancranjan, who opened the season ranked in the top-100 in the ITA preseason rankings. DePaul went to 3-0 on the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, before the match was clinched at No. 3 when Trevino fell in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

Huck fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, before Sato lost a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 battle at No. 1 singles. The final result of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles where Sherif fell 6-4, 6-4.

The loss drops IPFW to 10-5 on the season, and the team returns to action for a Midwestern trip that includes a match at Bradley on March 7, at Missouri State on March 9, and the teams’ Summit League season opener on March 10 at Oral Roberts.
