St. Paul’s, Holy Cross Win ILSAA Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – It was a busy weekend for middle school basketball players, with the Indiana Lutheran Schools Basketball State Championship taking place at Concordia Lutheran High School on Sunday

Keion Brooks Jr. hit a buzzer beater off a Chayanne Quintana miss to lift St. Paul’s over Emmanual St. Michael’s 30-29 in the boys title game. Brooks Jr. threw down several dunks over the course of the tournament, and led the Bears in scoring in the championship game with 23 points. Several Big Ten schools have already expressed in 6-foot-6, 175-pound eighth grader. His parents told NewsChannel thare are still deciding where he will attend high school.

In the girls finals, Sylare Starks led the Holy Cross Crusaders to a state title with a 36-23 win over the Wyneken Warriors. Starks finished with 18 points, and was crowned the tournament MVP. Amaya Pratt followed with 8 points. Tori Miller led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points.

Both St. Paul’s and Holy Cross advance to the Lutheran National Tournament. That will take place March 19th through the 22nd at Valparaiso University.
