FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A family-owned jeweler closed its doors Wednesday after doing business in Fort Wayne for nearly 70 years.
Freeman Jewelers employed four generations of the family. The business moved to Auburn Park Drive in 2004 after 59 years on Wells Street. The three owning partners, two brothers and a sister, are selling off the triplex building where the store is located near Dupont Road. Recent health problems compelled them to retire.
They said it’s the relationships with their customers that they’ll miss most. All those they’ve helped to celebrate engagements, anniversaries, baptisms and so many other joyful occasions.
“Fort Wayne’s been real good to us through the years,” Robert Freeman said.
“It’s been very nice meeting all the people, having them put their trust in us,” said Larry Freeman. “They’ll be missed very much. We thank them for being not only our friends, but our customers.”
While sons and daughters, nieces and nephews have worked for the family business in recent years, there is no heir apparent or next generation of Freemans positioned to take over at this time.
