FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Blackhawk Christian has won its fair share of boys basketball, baseball, and soccer post-season championships, but those trophies may have to make space. The Blackhawk girls basketball team won its first 1A sectional championship in program history this past weekend and for that WANE-TV is proud to honor the Chargers as the FWO Team of the Week.
The Braves beat both Bethany Christian and Hamilton in sectional play to advance to the upcoming regional round at Caston High School.
Blackhawk’s sectional championship nearly didn’t happen. The Braves trailed Bethany by seven at the start of the fourth quarter in Friday’s semi-final game. However, Blackhawk outscored Bethany 13-3 in the final eight minutes to take the 38-35 win.
The Braves were one of a few schools to win a sectional title on Saturday night, after many area games were postponed to Monday due to snow. Blackhawk beat Hamilton on Saturday night, 50-37.
Blackhawk Coach Kendall Hoffman is in her fourth season as the Braves head coach. She said her team never made it to the sectional championship game until this season.
Hoffman also said that the Braves’ regular season schedule was a part of her team’s success. Blackhawk didn’t play a 1A opponent in January. That’s when the Braves beat Bethany Christian, 47-38. Hoffman continued to say that playing bigger schools helped her team get better for postseason play.
Blackhawk, who is now 10-13 on the season, will face powerhouse Oregon-Davis on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the regional semi-final. The winner will advance to the regional final later that night.
