FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women’s basketball team scored the first points of the game and never looked back as the Mastodons snapped a three-game losing streak, defeating Omaha 70-59. IPFW improves its record to 8-13 on the season and 2-6 in Summit League play.
Haley Seibert led the ‘Dons with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including four from long range. She added a game-high five steals to go along with five assists. Kamilah Carter came off the bench to finish in double figures for the 11th time this season, scoring 17 points. Keanna Gary also finished in double-digits with 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds.
IPFW opened the game with a three by Mur Hagerman as the ‘Dons took an early 9-2 lead 16:44 into the game. Both teams exchanged seven-point runs as the Mastodons continued to led Omaha 16-12 with 9:01 left. A 13-5 Mastodon run over the next 3:47 pushed IPFW’s lead to 12. The Mavs closed out the half on a six-point swing but the ‘Dons led 34-27.
After the Mastodons scored the first five points of the second half, Omaha answered with the next seven to cut the IPFW lead to five, 39-34. Minutes later, the ‘Dons connected on seven straight points of their own to push the lead back to double digits. The Mastodon lead never dipped into single-digits again as the IPFW defense held the Mavericks to only three field goals in the final 7:55.
On the night, the ‘Dons connected on 24-of-51 (47.1%) shot attempts, including 11-of-20 (55%) from downtown, and making 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line. The Mastodon defense held Omaha to just two 3-pointers on the night, finishing at 13.3 percent on 2-of-15 shooting.
IPFW begins the second half of its Summit League schedule with a trip Western Illinois on January 31 for a 5:30 p.m. ET tip-off.
