VERMILLION, S.D. – Steve Forbes scored a game-high 21 points as the IPFW men’s basketball team picked up a 66-55 win on the road at the University of South Dakota.
Forbes hit 8-of-10 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe for his 21 points, as Joe Edwards went for 14 points and Max Landis 10. Isaiah McCray and Joe Reed each pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Mastodons,as IPFW out-rebounded the Coyotes 34-to-31. Mo Evans tied a career-high with eight assists, with 17 of the team’s 25 baskets in the game came on an assist.
IPFW hit 53.2 percent (25-of-47) from the field, but made just 4-of-18 (22.2%) from long range and 12-of-18 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. South Dakota was 24-of-60 (40.0%) from the floor, 3-of-19 (15.8%) from long range and just 4-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The teams went back and forth for the first 15 minutes of the game with seven ties and two lead changes. South Dakota held a two-point, 22-20 lead with 5:14 to play before the Mastodons closed the half on a 13-2 run, taking a nine-point, 33-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half the Mastodons never relinquished its advantage, and used a 6-0 run to turn an 11-point advantage into a 17-point lead with 4:03 to play in the game, before IPFW took its foot of the gas pedal and cruised to the 11-point, 66-55 victory.
South Dakota was led by James Hunter who scored 14 points, while three other players, Casey Kasperbauer, Tyler Larson, and Sekou Harris each scored six.
The Mastodons remain on the road and will face off against the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday, January 31.
