Vipers Split Back-to-Back Series With Mad Ants

HIDALGO, Texas  The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (12-13) fell 128-123 to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (17-11) tonight at State Farm Arena. The two teams split the back-to-back series. RGV won 118-112 Friday night.

Isaiah Canaan and Glen Rice, Jr. each scored 23 points to lead the Vipers. Clint Capela added 17 points and Chris Johnson scored 16 points. Nick Johnson tallied 11 points and Tony Bishop recorded 10 points.

Andre Emmett led the Mad Ants with 35 points, followed by Erick Green with 22 points. Marcus Simmons and CJ Fair each contributed 14 points. Gary Talton scored a double-double 13 points and 10 assists. Travis Hyman also added 13 points.

Chris Johnson opened the game with a three-pointer to put the Vipers on top 3-0. The Vipers held the lead the remainder of the first half. With 6:43 on the clock in the second quarter, Bishop gave RGV its largest lead of the half, 48-37. By halftime, Fort Wayne had closed its deficit to 59-55. RGV scored 10 of its 16 total three-pointers in the first half.

With 0:37.3 left in the third quarter, Green made a layup to tie the game at 75 points. Then, Hyman made a free throw to grab Fort Wayne’s first lead of the night 88-87. The lead changed four times during the fourth quarter as each team fought for control. With 2:49 on the clock, Canaan sank a three-pointer to put RGV ahead 117-115. However, Fair and Green made consecutive layups to take the 119-117 lead for Fort Wayne. The Vipers were not able to recover and fell 128-123.

The Vipers hit the road for a matchup at Iowa Tuesday, Jan. 27. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT). Locally, Vipers fans can watch the game at Pepper’s at Uptown. Food and drink specials will be available throughout the game. RGV will be back at home Friday, Jan. 30 to host the Texas Legends at 7 p.m. (CT).
