FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Deck at Hall’s Gas House is a step closer to a major expansion on the Fort Wayne riverfront downtown.

This week city council agreed to return a piece of land to Hall’s, an approach to the old Spy Run Bridge, which no longer exists.  The parcel is necessary to the Deck’s 3,300-square-foot addition.

The Deck has opened during the summer months and typically opens for the season after Mother’s Day. It sits on the St. Mary’s Riverfront, behind Don Hall’s Old Gas House.

Owner Ben Hall said his willingness to expand on the riverfront may be a catalyst for future development.

“We’ve been in this location since the late 50s we’ve seen the glory days of downtown – we’ve probably also seen the bottom,” said Hall. “Downtown resurgance over the past half a dozen years has been remarkable.  We are happy to be a part of it. At the end of the day we are hoping to make a nickel selling you a hamburger and something cold to drink with it.”

The proposed expansion would add seats for an additional 60 to 70 diners and add a lobby where guests can wait for a table. The Deck currently seats about 85 in the dining area. The plans do still need approval from more government agencies before work can start on the the expansion. The Halls hope to break ground by spring.
