MONROE, Ind. (WANE) – For the second time in three years, the Adams Central wrestling team has claimed the 1A state team championship. The Jets, or BAGUBAS, won the championship with team wins over Eastside, Churubusco, Bremen, and Prairie Heights. For their run to the state championship, the Jets are this week’s FWO Team of the Week.
The Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State finals took place Saturday, January 3 at Ball State University.
Adams Central was the two seed in the tournament. The Jets beat Churubusco, the defending 1A champions, in the opening match, 38-22. The Jets and Eagles split the 14 weight divisions, but Adams Central had the edge behind five wins by pinfall.
From there, Adams Central took down Eastside, 59-16, and beat Bremen, 51-16.
In the finals, Adams Central faced Prairie Heights, the top-seeded team. The Jets were trailing after eight matches by a score of 21-18. From there, Adams Central won three of the next five weight classes to re-claim the lead, at 32-28. In the final match, at 152 pounds, Ryan Ashley won by decision to give his team a 35-28 win. Ashley had lost his previous three matches on the day.
On the day, Adams Central had five wrestlers go a perfect 4-0. They were Luke Leiter, Andy Oliver, Kaine Luginbill, Hunter Bates, and Anthony Mosser.
On the season, Kaine Luginbill is the only wrestler on the team with a perfect record. As of the state team finals, the senior had 19 wins this winter.
The IHSWCA team state finals were created in 2013 to give wrestling programs a team champion. After the 2012 season, the IHSAA changed the format of its state tournament to make it more of an individual sport.
The Jets are scheduled to go to Warren Central on Saturday, January 17 for a Superdual.
