SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) An Indiana State Trooper was injured when his squad car was rear-ended Thursday morning after he had pulled over to attend to a motorist who had crashed minutes earlier.
The incident took place shortly before noon on the Indiana Toll Road near South Bend. Trooper Andrew Kocsis, 32, had just gotten back into his car when a Ford Expedition rear-ended him, causing his car to rear-end the crashed car sitting in front of him. The driver of the Expedition told police he lost control after hitting ice on a bridge.
The driver of the SUV was not injured, however Kocsis was taken to a South Bend hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the car he had stopped to assist was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Conditions on a five mile stretch of the toll road where the crash took place were described as treacherous by police with blowing snow, ice and bitter cold temperatures.
