HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) – Healthy habits are paying off for one Huntington family.  Members of the Minick family say they’re eating better, exercising, and spending more time together.  Now, they’ve made the top five in a nationwide Boys and Girls Club challenge.

In a matter of weeks, the Minicks will be on their way to Miami, Florida to compete against five other families.  They say making it to the finals wasn’t easy.

“My mom kept pushing us to get to the finals, and she was like, ‘We’ve got to win this year,'” Eli Minick said.

Passion and dedication kept the Minick family going.  After all, changing your activity and what you eat every day isn’t easy.

“Picking better foods and smaller portions, snacks, getting healthier foods, exercising more, and spending time together as a family,” mother Angela Minick said.

Angela Minick says her family’s soul coach suggested they do the “Triple Play Fit Family Challenge.”  After talking with her son and daughter, they were all in.

“My favorite activity was walking around the mall and the block and definitely doing the cooking class with the Boys and Girls Club,” Gabby Minick said.

For months, they’ve had to document everything from healthy food choices they made to how they worked out together as a family.

“So, when we were walking around the mall, I’d take a picture of us in the mall or if we were eating Subway get a picture of us eating at Subway,” Angela said.

Besides striving to win the finale in Miami, the Minicks are excited about their first time flying.

“Well, I’m looking forward to having my first flight on an airplane. It seems really exciting,” Gabby said.

The winning family will get an all-expense paid family vacation to the U-S Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs along with other prizes to keep them on track.
