INDIANAPOLIS – The IPFW women’s basketball team dropped its Summit League road opener to IUPUI 78-68. After the opening weekend of league play, the Mastodons are 0-2 in The Summit League and 6-9 overall.
Haley Seibert led IPFW with a game-high 20 points, including four buckets from long range. Kamilah Carter came off the bench to finish the night in double-digits with 14 points to go along with a game-high three steals. Hillary Moore led the Mastodons with eight rebounds and added eight points. Keanna Gary scored nine points while Rachel Rinehart had a game-high five assists.
In the opening minutes, the Jags jumped out to an early lead with an 8-2 advantage. The Mastodon offense was held without a point over a 5:31 span to give IUPUI a 15-5 lead. IPFW used a 7-0 run at the 7:44 mark cut the Jaguar lead to one, 23-22. Seibert closed out the half connected on a three-pointer with 1:10 left as the ‘Dons trailed IUPUI 34-29 at the break.
The two sides exchanged baskets through the opening seven minutes of the second half, before the Jaguars increased their lead to 16 points with 15-2 advantage. The Mastodons fought their way back to within four with an 18-6 run, trailing 64-60 with 3:48 to go. IPFW was unable to close the gap down the stretch, as IUPUI made 10-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes.
The ‘Dons shot nearly identical numbers in the first and second half, finishing the night connecting on 21-of-61 from the floor. The team also went 8-of-24 on three’s and 18-of-26 at the free throw line.
IPFW returns home to the Gates Center to face South Dakota State on January 9 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
