Arrests made in fatal crash investigation

Firefighters found the vehicle disintegrated and on fire when they arrived.

MILFORD, Ind. (WANE) The driver of a car police say was speeding when it crashed and burst into flames just after midnight on Saturday in rural Kosciusko County has been arrested. A second person was also arrested for helping the driver, who fled the scene, avoid capture.

Kami L. Ellis, 27, of Nappanee was a passenger in the car when it slammed into a tree and sign on County Road 1350 North. Milford firefighters found her charred body inside the wreckage. Dental records were used to identify her.

Investigators quickly learned the driver had taken off after the crash and had been picked up by another person. Just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, officers with the Warsaw Police Department learned the driver was staying at the Holiday Inn Express with another person. Scott L. Wilkins, 36, of Milford told officers he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer. He also needed medical treatments for the injuries he suffered in the crash. Wilkins was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and from there was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital. Charges against Wilkins are pending.

Police also arrested Vicki Lynn Simmons, 61, of Milford and charged her with a felony for helping Wilkins.

Investigators believe Wilkins lost control of his 2007 Nissan 350 Z causing it to slide sideways and cross the roadway where it hit a tree, then a sign before it slid into a field and caught fire.
