Huge house fire may have started near furnace

Fire destroyed this home in Scott, Ohio Sunday night.

SCOTT, Ohio (WANE) – A massive fire destroyed a home in Scott, Ohio Sunday night. Crews were called to 9035 Road 12 around 5:09 p.m. That’s near Richey Road, right across the county line into Paulding County.

A viewer in Convoy, Ohio, which is about ten miles away, told NewsChannel 15 that she could see the smoke from her house. Three hours later, firefighters were still there.

Firefighters at the scene told NewsChannel 15’s photographer that a neighbor down the road called in the fire and that the house was fully engulfed when they arrived. Four engines and four tanker trucks from Scott, Grover Hill, Payne and Paulding fire departments responded. A firefighter said the biggest obstacle was that the house is in the “middle of nowhere” and the closest water source was four miles away. That’s why several tanker trucks had to be called in. An exact cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet, but fire officials think it started in the back of the house by the furnace. Fire crews also said no one was hurt.

A family friend told NewsChannel 15 that eight people lived in the home. A firefighter said when they arrived everybody was out of the house, but he didn’t know how many people were home at the time. It’s not clear if there was a working smoke detector in the home. Several cars and motorcycles were also destroyed. The Red Cross was at the scene assisting the family.

No other information about the fire has been released yet.
