Navistar plans closing Indianapolis foundry

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Navistar International has announced plans to close an Indianapolis foundry and eliminate its 180 jobs.

Navistar said Monday that it expected the closure would be completed next summer. The foundry on the east side of Indianapolis makes engine blocks and other parts.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1wA6aXH ) the company based in suburban Chicago plans to rely on existing suppliers to pick up the foundry’s production. Navistar projects the closure will save it about $13 million a year.

Navistar says it expects the move will help it lower engine costs and improve the utilization of its manufacturing capacity.
