Harper running for Fort Wayne mayor

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Mitch Harper is the first Republican to announce he’s joining the 2015 mayoral race.

The Ft. Wayne City Councilman shared his intentions to run at an invitation-only event with community and business leaders Wednesday night.  Harper represents the 4th district, which includes neighborhoods on the west side of the city – Waynedale, Time Corners and much of Aboite Township.

While he was not available for comment Thursday, a representative from his campaign says he is already fundraising and assembling a staff.

Incumbent Tom Henry, a Democrat I s finishing his second four-year term.  He told NewsChannel 15 that it will be a few weeks before he decides whether to run for a third term next year.  “It takes a lot to run for office and I really applaud anybody who makes that decision,” Henry said.  “I have to take my time as far as making sure that’s what I want to do.”

“To have a candidate of Mitch Harper’s caliber to already have announced indicates that the Republicans are very serious about taking on the incumbant mayor,” Steve Shine said.  Shine is chairman of the Allen County Republican party.

Harper will hold an official campaign event after the first of the year.
