Van carrying inmates crashes on I-69

DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) An Allen County Corrections officer lost control of the van he was driving on ice covered I-69 Tuesday morning in a crash that sent all five inmates on board to a Delaware County hospital with minor injuries.

The crash took place just after 8 am at mile marker 34 according to a press release from the Indiana State Police. The release stated that John Calvin, 26, was driving the five inmates from the Allen County Jail to the Indiana Department of Corrections facility in Pendleton. After Calvin lost control, the van rolled onto the passenger side.

Brandon Woodrum, 25, of Fort Wayne, and Travis Hornett, 34, of Fort Wayne, complained of pain to their lower back.

Robert Franks, 25, and Michael Smith, 56, both of Fort Wayne, were complained of pain in the shoulders and back. Robert Sleek, 62, address unknown, suffered a cut to the head. The van was considered to be a total loss.

Several highways in central Indiana, including I-69, were slick from freezing rain Tuesday morning. I-70 in Vigo County had to be closed by police for a time because of slick conditions.
