CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a Hammond man to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his 10-year-old son.
The Times of Munster reports 35-year-old Jason Lee DeGroot Sr. showed no emotion during his sentencing Tuesday. He told Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Boswell he was close to his son and didn’t know what happened when he shot Jason DeGroot Jr. in the back in their Hammond home on Nov. 14, 2011.
The boy died at the scene. The elder DeGroot was treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
The elder DeGroot entered the guilty plea after prosecutors agreed to dismiss a murder charge. The plea agreement says he was diagnosed in 2012 with major depressive disorder.
