Luers Grad Smith Named Finalist For Butkus Award

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) – Notre Dame sophomore and Bishop Luers graduate Jaylon Smith was named one of five finalists for the 2014 Butkus Award on Monday.
The honor goes to the country’s top linebacker. The winner will be announced December 9.
Smith is joined by Eric Kendricks (UCLA), Hau’oli Kikaha (Washington), Denzel Perryman (Miami), and Jake Ryan (Michigan).
Smith leads the Irish with 89 total tackles (54 solo), and is tied for the team lead with 7.5 tackles for loss.
Smith won the high school version of the Butkus Award in 2012 at Luers after leading the Knights to four straight state championships.
