Radio station raises more than $60,000 for Rescue Mission

Staff members of Star 88.3 raise money for the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Listeners of a Fort Wayne radio station donated more than $63,000 over just a couple days for the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, the station reported.

Leaders at Star 88.3 decided to raise the money in response to the recent homeless evictions downtown and the extremely cold weather.

The fundraising started Tuesday at 6 a.m. and ended Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The folks at the station said they’re never sure what’s going to happen when they ask for help on the air, but considered this response amazing.

“You start making a plea on the air and asking people if they will help -could they help- and when they start making the phone calls or getting online and they do respond to that, we’re just kind of blown away by the generosity of this community. We’re so proud of them,” said Star 88.3 President and CEO Melissa Montana.

Along with raising money, Star 88.3 has been telling the stories of the men, women and children of The Rescue Mission.
