COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WANE)  An inmate at the Whitley County Jail who died Tuesday evening had been arrested by a Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy earlier in the day for OWI and being a habitual traffic offender.  An additional charge of criminal mischief was added after the deputy witnessed Kevin J. Minnix damage some equipment at the hospital where blood was being drawn as part of the arrest procedure.  Based on an autopsy, it has been determined foul play was not a factor in Minnix’ death, however Coroner Randy Dellinger did not indicate the cause of death in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.

Minnix, 48, of Columbia City was brought to the jail from the hospital and placed in a holding cell at 3:35 pm according to the coroner’s release.  At 8:41 pm, confinement officers found Minnix unconscious and unresponsive in his cell.  They immediately began to perform CPR until Whitley County EMS arrived about five minutes later.  Minnix was pronounced dead at 9:20 pm after multiple attempts to revive him.  Minnix was the only inmate in the cell.
