ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Emergency crews rescued a man from a northern Indiana river after his vehicle went off a highway and into the water.

Elkhart County sheriff’s Lt. Casey Lehman tells The Elkhart Truth that the man was on top of the vehicle in the St. Joseph River when rescuers arrived Friday morning.

The SUV went off Indiana 120 just east of Elkhart and through a yard before plunging into the river. WNDU-TV reports emergency workers threw a rope out to the man to bring him to shore. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The SUV was completely submerged in the river and divers were working with a tow truck to pull it out.

The crash happened as numerous wrecks were reported in the area on roads slick from lake-effect snowfall.
