FORT WAYNE, IN. (WANE) – The Komets almost saw a third period lead evaporate for a second straight night. Kalamazoo scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation, but Fort Wayne did just enough to squeeze out a 5-4 win at Memorial Coliseum.
The K’s jumped out to a quick lead, courtesy of first period goals from Mitchell Heard and Shawn Szydlowski to give Fort Wayne an early 2-0 lead. Heard added a second goal in the second period, just over 90 seconds after Eric Faille netted his first of the night, making it a 4-0 lead before the Wings got on the board. The Komets fifth and final goal came on the power play midway through the third, courtesy of C.J. Severyn.
Goaltender Sami Aittokallio stopped 25 of 29 shots in the winning effort.
