FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Eleven Fort Wayne Police Department officers are taking mountain bike classes this week at the Public Safety Academy.
Police Mountain Bicycle School began on Tuesday and wraps up Friday. The participants will complete a variety of classroom training, riding exercises, conditioning exercises, and both written and skill testing in order to complete the course and achieve certification as a Fort Wayne Police Department Law Enforcement Bicycle Association Officer, a police spokesman said.
Once certified, they will be additional resources to the existing FWPD Bicycle Patrol Program.
The group is participating in activities ranging from a training ride to a firearms exercise to repairing a flat tire.
Police said there’s an increased need for bike patrols in Fort Wayne and they do plan to certify more officers to be on bicycle patrol next year.
