FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Carroll cross country head coach Phil Yoder says the goal is to be running your best race by the postseason, his team has taken that to an extreme. It’s why the Chargers are the choice for FWO Team of the Week honors.
Carroll has not only advanced to this Saturday’s state championship meet, they’ve won a sectional, regional and semi-state championship in the process. The Chargers ran away from the competition at The Plex, posting a team score of 58, a full 74 points ahead of second place Mt. Vernon (Fortville). Junior Cameron Clements lead the way, winning the individual title in a time of 15:30.04, while teammates Jacob Schmeling and Trevor Hamilton both finished in the top ten.
Yoder and his team not find themselves in familiar territory. The Chargers finished in second place at the 2012 state meet and third in 2013. Senior Jacob Schmeling acknowledges winning a state championship will be a difficult challenge, but that just finishing on the podium for a third straight year would leave a remarkable legacy at a program that has excelled in cross country for a number of years.
