FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The second week of sectional action is upon us and The News-Sentinel writer Justin Kenny and WANE sports director Glenn Marini discuss and debate this Friday’s sectional showdowns all across the area.
In 6A it will be a rivalry renewed, as Homestead travels to Carroll for the second time this season. The Chargers defeated Homestead 13-6 back on October 3 and are coming off a 40-3 road win at Warsaw last week. Meanwhile, Homestead hung 56 on Northrop last week behind three touchdown passes from Logan Ormsby.
5A action will finally get underway after a bye last Friday as Snider travels to Huntington North and Wayne hosts North Side. The Generals and Redskins met during the regular season with Wayne edging the defending SAC champion 35-34 on September 12.
In 4A play Leo travels to NorthWood and East Noble hosts Northridge in sectional 19. The Lions are coming off a 20-16 win at Wawasee last week while NorthWood had no trouble in Angola, beating the Hornets 48-6. Meanwhile, 4A no. 9 Northridge shutout Bishop Dwenger 21-0 last week while East Noble had little trouble in defeating DeKalb. In 4A sectional 20 play Columbia City heads to New Haven while Norwell hosts Marion. The Eagles bested South Side last Friday 39-0 while New Haven went on the road to easily defeat Logansport. This will be a rematch of the September 26 game between New Haven and Columbia City that saw the Bulldogs win 42-21. Norwell is coming off a solid win at Frankfort while Marion bested Jay County last week 38-20.
In 3A Bishop Luers travels to Heritage while Bellmont hits the road to face Garrett. The 3A no. 3 Knights were tested last week by Concordia but eventually pulled out a 40-26 win while Heritage led West Noble big before holding off the hard-charging Chargers 41-34 in the end. The Railroaders, meanwhile, are rolling after a big win at Lakeland last Friday while Bellmont came from behind to top Whitko 24-20.
In 2A action NECC small division champion Eastside heads to Woodburn to take on Woodlan while Wabash hosts Bremen. The Blazers and Warriors met the first week of the regular season with Woodlan winning 57-33. Wabash, meanwhile, is coming off the program’s first sectional win since 1996.
In 1A Northfield is coming off a bye as the Norsemen will play at South Adams while Southern Wells travels to Southwood. The Starfires are coming off a 9-6 win on a Derek Wanner field goal as time expired to defeat county rival Adams Central. Southern Wells and Southwood are both 7-3 with this game being a rematch of a week one 26-7 win by the Knights.
