KALAMAZOO – Needing extra time the Fort Wayne (3-0-0-0) remained undefeated by upending the Kalamazoo Wings (2-1-1-0) 3-2 in overtime in front of a stand room only crowd of 5,122 Friday night at Wings Stadium during the K-Wings home opener and 11th annual Orange Ice Game, presented by Meijer.
Before Friday night, the K-Wings were the team that was known for their quick starts, while the Komets had given up the first goal in each of their first two games. That all changed when Mike Embach (1st) registered the lone goal of the first period. Skating into the slot, Embach beat goaltender Joel Martin with a wrister long the ice.
Early in the second period a Shawn Szydlowski (1st) one-timer pushed the Komets lead to the 2-0.
The Szdlowski goal served as a wakeup call for the K-Wings, especially for former Komet Josh Brittian. Minutes after falling behind by two, Brittian brought the K-Wings back to a single goal by recording his 100th career point on his first goal of the season.
Continuing the comeback midway in the stanza, Dane Fox (3rd) banked a slap shot off the crossbar and into the net to knot the game at 2-2.
Even with two goals in the period, the K-Wings biggest play highlight of the stanza was a penalty shot save from Martin. With just over six minutes remaining in the period, Martin stopped a backhand attempt from Matthew Pistill to keep the game tied at 2-2.
After a scoreless third period, the Komets would cut the K-Wings comeback short with an unassisted game-winner from Szdlowski (2nd) to cap off a three-point (2 goals, 1 assist) nigh
