Police: SUV crashes after driver falls asleep

NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A woman fell asleep on U.S. 6 near the intersection of County Road 400 East just before 10:30 Tuesday morning and ended up crashing her SUV into an embankment according to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department.

Karen M. Allen, 72, of Burr Oak, Michigan was driving west and when she fell asleep her Ford Escape drifted off the road and hit a driveway, causing the SUV to go airborne for about 120 feet. It landed on the south side of U.S. 6 and traveled about 105 feet down an embankment before coming to a stop.

Allen was wearing a seatbelt, however a passenger who was laying down in the back seat was not. Richard W. Allen, 56, also of Burr Oak, was thrown over the driver and into the front windshield. He was transported by helicopter to a hospital to be treated for head and shoulder injuries, while Karen Allen was taken by ambulance to a hospital for head injuries.
