FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Three people were shot near a home south of downtown early Wednesday morning.
Police were initially called to 2423 Fairfield Avenue for a reported shooting just before 1 a.m., but redirected to 546 Pierce Avenue a block away.
Police discovered two victims at the Pierce Avenue location and later learned the third victim had ran to an apartment building on Fairfield Avenue to call 911.
Investigators said two men and a woman were shot. Officers found multiple shell casings behind the house and crime scene technicians were gathering other pieces of evidence.
According to a police report, one of the male victims was a security guard at Kroger who had got off work and was visiting a friend on Pierce Avenue. When he arrived at his friends he said he witnessed a man beating a woman behind the Pierce Avenue residence.
The security guard said it was too dark outside to describe the male other than a white guy, and he described the female as a black woman. He tried to stop the man from hitting the woman when the man pulled out a small gun and started shooting “all over the place.” The security guard pulled his gun and began to shoot back. He was shot in his lower right leg.
A witness saw the male run into the house. Other police reports indicate that he called 911 to report the shooting. When police arrived at 546 Pierce Avenue, a young woman answered the door hysterical. Police found her mother in the house with a “through and through” bullet wound.
Meanwhile, another officer entered the apartment next door and found several guns and a man in the kitchen who had been shot in the right knee.
Police told NewsChannel 15 one man was taken to the hospital in serious condition and a second man was hospitalized in fair condition. The mother who was shot in the arm declined medical treatment.
It’s unclear how many shots were fired or what types of weapons were used. However, police found three rifles and a hand gun at the male victim’s house.
The incident is under investigation.
