Steuben lake patrol activity details released

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)  The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department conducted 178 patrols on 18 different lakes this past boating season and for the third year in a row there weren’t any major boating accidents or drownings.  Each patrol was scheduled for about four hours, but may have been longer or shorter depending on boat traffic and weather conditions.

The following statistics do not include activity from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which also patrols some of the lakes in Steuben County.

  • Tickets issued -18
  • Warnings issued – 250
  • Boating While Intoxicated – 6
  • Minor in Possession of Alcohol – 1
  • Boater assist – 66 (tows, questions, hull identification checks, etc.)
  • Patrol assist – 20

Currently the Steuben County Marine Patrol is made up of 11 volunteer Marine Reserve Deputies, 6 Full Time Patrol Deputies and is managed by Sgt. Adam Miller. It’s paid for by a $25,000.00 grant through the Department of Natural Resources from L.A.R.E. funding.
