FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A new book written by Robert Matzen highlights the life of Hoosier Carole Lombard and her tragic death.
Lombard was born in Fort Wayne in 1908. She was an Academy Award nominated actress and also the highest paid actress of the 1930s. Lombard married fellow famous actor Clark Gable in 1939.
During World War II, Lombard went to sell war bonds in Indiana. On her flight home with her mother and 17 others, TWA Flight 3 crashed into Potosi Mountain west of Las Vegas in 1942. Matzen explores what happened before and after the plane crash in “Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight 3”.
Matzen is speaking on Sunday, October 5 at the Fort Wayne History Center about the book. The event starts at 2 p.m. and is free for the public. An exhibit about her life will be on display before the lecture. Lombard’s family home will be open for tours around 5 p.m.
