Indiana Pumpkin Growers Association hosts giant vegetable contest

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The growing season gave way to a large number of proud produce growers across the state.

Many of them turned out Saturday to Gary Greenhouse for the Indiana Pumpkin Growers Association’s giant vegetable contest. That’s when growers of massive pumpkins, watermelons, tomatoes and more compare and compete.

“It’s like any other hobby. You know, there’s always somebody that wants to do the best and just like father, son, brother, daughter – boy if somebody instills a little competition in you, away you go, and that starts it and it just grows from there,” Pete Dudley, pumpkin owner, said.

Several pumpkin growers said their squash was close to 1,000 pounds if not more.

Those weighing in the highest go home with cash prizes.
