INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police arrested an Indianapolis mother following an incident that left her 3-year-old injured on Monday.

A 3-year-old boy shot himself in the hand after finding a loaded gun underneath the couch cushions, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said. The incident happened in the 9000 block of East 39th Place on the city’s northeast side. The boy went to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, though his injuries weren’t considered life-threatening.

The boy’s mother, Arnita Wilson, 31, was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent. Police said Wilson is the one who left the loaded gun where the child could find it. He found the gun while left alone.
