Police: Foul play not suspected in Defiance drowning

DEFIANCE, Ohio (WANE) – Officials do not think foul play is to blame for the death of a man who was pulled from the Auglaize River Monday evening.

Police got the call about a body in the river behind the Riverside Cemetery at 1349 S. Clinton St. just before 6 p.m. Monday. Police say a recreational boater initially spotted the body. The Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office dive team, the Defiance Police Department and the Shafer Funeral home worked together to recover the body.

Family members helped officials identify the body as 28-year-old Mark A. Esparza, from Defiance. Esparza’s body was taken to the Lucas County Coroner for an autopsy and investigators have determined that Esparza drowned.

This case is still under investigation. The Defiance County Sheriff’s Department is still waiting for the toxicology results.
