MSOC: West’s Hat Trick Carries Dons Past IUPUI

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Austin West scored his first-career hat trick to lead the IPFW men’s soccer team to a physical 4-0 win in the Summit League opener against in-state rival IUPUI on Saturday evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Mastodons (3-3-3, 1-0 Summit League) now lead the all-time series, 10-9-2, over the Jaguars (2-5, 0-1 Summit League).

West’s three goals are the most in a regular-season Summit League match since IPFW’s Max Touloute accomplished it against Milwaukee on August 26, 2011. Additionally, his hat trick is the first during a conference match since Kansas City’s John Bayron Sosa accomplished the feat against IPFW on October 23, 2010.

West began his hat trick in the 15th minute with a shot past the Jaguar goalkeeper in the lower right corner. The play originated with a quick past from Jacob Murphy to Jose Rodriguez, who immediately crossed the ball into the box for the goal by West.

Coming in the 22nd minute, West found the back of the net just inside the right post with a shot from 10 yards out.

Just five minutes later, West completed his hat trick with a free kick beating the keeper in the upper left corner from 15 yards out.

Randy Maksimik capped the Mastodon scoring in the 70th minute as the ball beat a diving keeper to his right. Murphy earned his second assist on the day following his centering pass to Maksimik.

Raphael Kotzock earned his second shutout of the season, extending his scoreless streak to 282 minutes. Kotzock made two saves against the Jaguars, while the Mastodons earned four total saves against IUPUI.

The teams split the overall shots with 11 each, while IPFW held a 6-2 advantage in the first half. The Jaguars earned a 7-0 upper hand in corner kicks against the ‘Dons.

The Mastodons host the Bowling Green Falcons on October 1, in a non-conference matchup. The match is set to kickoff at 7 p.m., at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
