Toddler drowns after motorized toy tips into pond

Rescue crews search a pond in southern Allen County Tuesday for a three-year-old girl.

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A 3-year-old girl died after an apparent drowning Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., emergency personnel were called to the 16000 block of Prine Road, approximately one mile northeast of Zanesville.

According to Allen County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Corporal Jeremy Tinkel, the girl was riding in a toy riding vehicle with a 4-year-old boy when it tipped over into a pond.drowning2

Tinkel said the boy went for help and several adults at the home could not find the girl. Tinkel did not have information on where the adults were in relation to the pond when the accident occurred.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department Water Rescue Team was dispatched to search the pond.

The girl was eventually located in the pond about an hour after crews were first dispatched. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Allen County Coroner identified the 3-year-old as Addison E. Hartman on Wednesday and declared the cause of death to be drowning.

Tinkel said the small pond had limited visibility due to recent rains, which caused the water to be murky. Several water rescue team members could be seen standing in the pond with water coming up to their waistlines.

The relationship between the children or the adults at the home was not clear Tuesday afternoon.

The incident is under investigation.
