FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Leaders at East Allen County Schools hosted an open house and dedication ceremony Tuesday to showcase the district’s new sensory room.
The sensory room, which is designed to create both a calming and stimulating atmosphere for students, is located on the Woodlan K-12 campus. The room contains specialized equipment that addresses different sensory-based needs. As a result, educators say there’s a decrease in destructive and disruptive behaviors and an increase in student focus and productivity.
“There’s jumping and there’s bike riding and there’s swinging and there’s musical steps. It’s a great release for students who need to be stimulated in that type of manner,” explained EACS Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Folks.
A sensory room costs about $15,000 to build.
