Motorcyclist killed in morning crash identified

Motorcyclist dies in downtown Fort Wayne in Thursday morning crash.


FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man is dead after a motorcycle and flatbed semi collided early Thursday morning. The Allen County Coroner identified the victim as Carl Howard Harz, 49, of Fort Wayne.

Harz is the nineteenth traffic fatality in Allen County in 2014.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to West Jefferson Boulevard and Ewing Street, downtown, just before 7 a.m.

Investigators said the motorcycle and semi were traveling east on Jefferson Blvd. when the semi attempted a left turn onto Ewing Street and collided with the motorcycle. The motorcycle ended up approximately 50 yards down the road. Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The semi driver was not hurt.

Markings on the cab of the truck indicated it belongs to Stephan DRP out of Roanoke and Andrews.

Following standard policy, the truck driver will undergo alcohol and drug screenings.

FWPD spokesperson Officer Chris Felton said it does not appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Investigators were interviewing witnesses and any surveillance video from the area will be looked at.

West Jefferson was closed in both directions for some time at Fairfield Avenue and Ewing, it has since reopened.
