FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Mayor Tom Henry packed bags with food at South Wayne Elementary on Thursday, as well as several other mayors from around the country, as part of a program that helps children in the community.
The United States Conference of Mayors participated in the “Blessings in a Backpack” program which is a non-profit organization that provides food to families in need over the weekend.
In Fort Wayne, the program is offered at Abbett, Adams, Fairfield and South Wayne elementary schools. It provides food for 1,700 students each week.
FWCS partners with Parkview Regional medical Center and Sodexo to purchase and deliver the food to schools. The food is purchased with funds provided through grants, private donations and an annual fundraiser.
