South Bend mayor returning home from Afghanistan

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The mayor of South Bend is on his way back home from a military deployment to Afghanistan that began nearly seven months ago.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO’-tah-juhj) posted photos to Facebook Tuesday showing the interior of a plane packed with military personnel. Spokeswoman Kara Kelly tells the South Bend Tribune the exact date of the mayor’s return isn’t known, but he is expected back at City Hall in early October.

Joseph Buttigieg says he received a message from his son Tuesday saying that he had left Afghanistan, although the timing of his arrival in the United States wasn’t clear.

The 32-year-old Democrat was elected mayor in 2011. He is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and served as an intelligence officer during his deployment.
