FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Firefighters evacuated a building on Berry Street as a precaution Monday afternoon as they responded to a gas leak downtown.
Crews received a call about a possible gas line cut in the 900 block of Webster Street between Wayne Street and Berry Street at 4:22 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters were notified that construction crews working in the area had struck a gas line.
As a precaution, firefighters evacuated the building at 229 Berry Street as well as the surrounding construction site. They went into neighboring buildings and continued to monitor the situation but determined further evacuations were not needed.
Crews from NIPSCO were able to find the shutoff valve and mitigate the leak at around 5:38 p.m.
The intersection of Berry Street and Harrison Street was shut down while crews worked to stop the leak, as was Harrison Street between Wayne Street and Main Street.
