FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) —Bad weather forced a skydiver to call off his attempt at breaking a record.
Jay Stokes was attempting to jump 700 times from 2,100 feet within 24 hours at the Frankfort Airport. Nearly 125 volunteers helped him go after the record.
Stokes is a former Green Beret and has broken his own record six times already. Skydive Indianapolis owner Bob Dougherty says planning for this record-setting event began nearly a year ago.
“We made the mistake of having an ‘if only we had’ conversations about the last one. Because 700 is kind of a mystical number to break, and we figured out how to do it,” he said.
Dougherty said the weather forced them to suspend the jumps at 300. He said those were the toughest 300 Stokes has ever made due to the heat and turbulence.
Stokes was also trying to raise more than $200,000 at the event. Proceeds will go to the Special Olympics and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.
