DAYTON, Ohio – The IPFW women’s volleyball team earned a sweep over Bakersfield in the opening match of the Flyer-Raider Invitational 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 26-24). The Mastodons are now 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2005.
Emily Spencer led IPFW with a match-high 16 kills to go along with nine digs. Kendall Wienkes added 12 kills while serving up a match-high five aces. Somer Johnson also got in on the double-digit action, finishing with 10 kills on the afternoon.
Mallory Slyder dished out 20 assists and eight digs, as Madison Spence finished with 18 assists and five digs. Hailie Ripley made a match-best four blocks with Olivia Hahn leading the defense with 10 digs.
IPFW trailed only once in the opening set (4-3) before scoring three consecutive points and never looking back. Bakersfield attempted a late comeback after the ‘Dons led by five, but Monica Hall closed the door with a kill to end the set.
In the second set, IPFW jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to three aces by Wienkes. The Roadrunners countered, scoring five consecutive points tying the set 12-12. The Mastodons scored the next two points to take the lead for good and secure the set.
The third set was hard-fought between the two sides as the ‘Runners had an early lead. A Kill by Spencer gave IPFW a 16-15 lead, but Bakersfield made a run to take the lead 24-21. After a kill by Spencer, Wienkes delivered back-to-back aces and Ripley closed out the match with consecutive kills to give IPFW the victory.
For the match, the Mastodons hit .243 as a team to pick up their first win over Bakersfield in three tries.
IPFW closes out the Flyer-Raider Invitational on September 6 against Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. followed by Bowling Green at 3 p.m.
